The north east struggles a bit when it comes to model photography; we are 300 miles away from the industry centre – London; we have poor weather for 45kg models to try and stay warm/smiley on location; and jobs don’t pay as well so we can’t afford the sophisticated flash equipment, expensive portrait lenses and high megapixel bodies our southern colleagues can. If we overcome those obstacles then……well there isn’t really a readily available market for our images is there!

Since starting model work again earlier this year I have enjoyed the various model sites and fora. I have worked with some really smashing models (in between rain showers and gales!). However, in the last couple of months, I have noticed a marked increase in the overall activity of north east models/togs/studios proportionate to the size of our community – basically we are popping up more often than you would expect on the national sites. Furthermore it is obvious that we have some of the most sought after models.

Possibly as evidence of this, I stumbled across a new website yesterday during one of my long spells at the pc - The Model Mall. Started by Marc Melling, the site is making a determined effort to get models, togs and make-up artists together. There is also the opportunity to have some really classy website design done for you at sensible prices. I have admired Marc’s work, particularly his location stuff, for some time now and the website has kicked off with a small but very promising core of both his work and that of some similarly talented north east people. I am sure the site will develop quite quickly as word of mouth spreads the news. There is a link to the site on my links page and I would recommend you to visit…….well, now really!

Exciting times – a time for collaboration, a time to push the north east modelling scene forward even more and a time for having fun at the same time!
